My novel Swimming with Serpents was inspired by the discovery of my Native American heritage through this Vann line. After writing Swimming with Serpents, I followed the survivors of Horseshoe Bend into the First Seminole War in Nest of Vipers, the second in my Serpents Series Family Saga. To confirm the Native American genealogy in the dedication of Swimming with Serpents, I took a Tribal DNA (Tribaldna.com) test that confirmed the Native American genealogy, but it was more specific than that. It was Mayan/Mexican/Native American confirming what a lot of Georgia anthropologists are speculating about what happened to many Mayans in the Mayan exodus of 700-900 AD. To order a signed copy of Swimming with Serpents, send a check for $29 (book $26, shipping and handling $3). Please include your name, address and email.

Jernigan Genealogy

You'll notice the spelling of the name Jernigan has undergone some changes. According to John Bennet Boddie, Historical Southern Familes, the name was changed to Jerningham because one side of the family disliked the other side of the family and sought to differentiate themselves by the spelling of the name. When our emigrant Jernigan came to America he embraced the egalitarianism of his new land and changed the spelling back because, according to Pabst, "Thomas Jernegan, the American immigrant did not believe that any individual should be exalted over his kin nor his neighbors in this new country of liberty and freedom."

He married FRANCES BAYNHAM, daughter of EDWARD BAYNHAM , SIR.

Notes for HENRY JERNINGHAM , SIR:

Boddie, Jernigan of Virginia and North Carolina, Historical SouthernFamilies, Vol.

Sir Henry Jerningham who died ca. 1571 was the son of Sir Edward Jernigan(d. 1515) and his si fe Mary (Scroope). Sir Henry was the founder of theCotessy branch of the Jernigans in the Co unty of Norfolk, England(Betham, The Baronetage of England, 1801-1803, p. 232, table 33). Si rHenry used the Jerningham spelling of his name to distinguish himselffrom the Jernigans who m he disliked.

Note: cf. Historical Southern Families, Vol. IV, p. 121 et seq.

Research shows that Sir Henry Jerningham achieved fame (or notoriety) among the Jerningham generations by adhering to the cause of Queen Mary, daughter of Henry VIII of England. She succeded her brother Edward VI and ruled from 1553-1558. Known as "Bloody Mary" she was a fanatical Catholic. She married Phillip II of Spain, popularly considered the arch-enemy of England . Her attempt to restore England to the Church of Rome ended in alienating her people and reducing the country to a condition approaching anarchy. Sir Henry Jerningham was an ardent supporter, and he, with all his "tenantry", joined forces with her at Kenninghall in July, 1553 . Sir Henry captured Yarmouth and rallied the county of Norfolk to her cause. He therefore stood high in the Queen's favor and became a member of the Privy Council.

When Queen Elizabeth came to the throne in 1558, Sir Henry was deprivedof his high offices an d all his manors and other properties were confiscated.

Sir Henry Jerningham married Frances, dughter of Sir Edward Baynham, andby her had two sons a nd two daughters; Henry who married Eleanor Dacres; William Francis; Mary who married _______ ______Southwell; and Jeronima who married _Waldgrave. It has been stated that the children of Henry and Eleanor (Dacres) Jernigan were the first emigrants to the Virginia Colony, that i s, the first of the Jerninghams in America. These sonswere Thomas of Norwich, Norfolk Co., E ngland and George who married a Miss Philpot of Somerton, Norfolk County.

Note: Judge B.B. Winbourne, in Colonial and State Political History ofHertford Co., N.C. stat es: "Three brothers came to Virginia". Howeverit is possible that Thomas's son John was bor n in England and accompanied his parents to Virginia which would explain the above error.

Records of the family of Jerningham (later to be spelled Jernegan and Jernigan) are found i n the marriage bonds of Norfolk County, England. The dates given are not marriage records, bu t the year in which the heir proved his in heritance before the County Court.

There were two, perhaps more, manors or "seats" of the Jerninghams. One was at Somerton, o n the cost of Norfolk, about ten miles north of GreatYarmouth. It was a parish at one time , but the church has now fallen into decay. (Note: Somerleyton in Suffolk Co., England, refer red to in Boddie's Historical Southern Families, Vol. iv, p. 121, is not the sameplace as Som erton, Norfolk.)

Thomas Jernigan the immigrant was born not later than 1643 and was livingin 1704. He was ter med "Master" in a grant to him of 250 acres in the"county of Nanzemund" at a place called Som erton on May 16, 1668. At thesession of the General Assembly in Virginia, which met in Novem ber, 1682,he was awarded payments in tobacco assessed against Nansemond County"for carrying p ublique letters into Carolina". In 1685, as ThomasJernigan Sr., he patented an addition 33 0 acres "at Somerton in the upperparish of Nansemond". On the Nansemond Quit Rent Roll of 17 04 he waslisted as holding 165 acres; probably by this time he had given all hislands with th e exception of his manor plantation to his son and heir. The name of his wife is uncertain, po ssibly Elizabeth Thompson.

Notes for BENJAMIN JERNIGAN:

We know that Benjamin and Vashti came to Alabama through Twiggs County, Georgia about 1815 a nd settled in Conecuh (now Escambia) county in the area my grandmother mentioned on the bac k of those pictures, an area called Fort Crawford across the river from Brewton, Alabama. His tory of Conecuh tells us that Andrew Jackson sent his "friends" from South Carolina (where Ja ckson was born) to keep herds of cattle there to supply his anticipated raid on the Spanish i n Florida. Jackson visited with Benjamin Jernigan at Fort Crawford. I cannot help but specula te on the possibility that if Vashti Vann was of Cherokee origin her connections with the pow erful Cherokee Vann leaders could have influenced their willingness to fight with Jackson a t Horseshoe Bend against the Creeks. This makes Jackson's betrayal and the Trail of Tears al l the more tragic. Novels have been written on fewer facts!

LETTER WRITTEN BY DESCENDANT

"On this the day of June 1902, it has received to me the undersigned atthe age of Seventy Sev en years nine months 17 days. Whil waiting at thehouse of my youngest son as well as my youn gest child, Charles Churchill Jernigan, in very bad state of health of mind and body which I have been laboring under about four yers commencing about the time of the death of my wife, 3rd of November 1898, to write a kind of trditional account orhistory of my ancestors and w here they came from to this country. (South Alabama and North Florida) My Grand Father Benja min Jernigan came fromSouth Carolina through Twiggs County, Georgia, to Conecuh County, Ala.about the date of 1815 while Gen. Jackson's troops ocupied Fort Crawford in Said Conecuh Count y and brought with him a wife and a large family of girls and boys. He had not lived here lo ng before he went to Pensacolathen occupied by the Spaniards and caught yellow fever. But h e survivedthe attack himself, but his wife taken the fever from him and died leaving a good m any children.

My mother who was a widow and whose maiden name was Winna Daniel came to the same Conecuh Cou nty and near the same place with her Sister who wasthe wife of Hugh Taylor. Soon after the y were all settled near Fort Crawford, Hugh Taylor was killed in an encounter with one Mr. Co oke andmy mother's sister was then left a widow and my mother was living with her. Soon afte r the death of Mr. Taylor my Grand Father and Widow Taylorwho was my mother's sister were mar ried. Very soon after this marriage,my Father being a young man and my mother a young woma n were married, thus the Father and Son were brothers by marriage. Brother-in-law and Grand F ather had four children born to this marriage 2 girls and 2 boys which were uncles and aunt s as well as cousins.

My Grandfather was the owner of 35 or so slaves and was one of the first to build a water sa w mill in Santa Rosa County, Florida. He was tolrably successful in business as well as hors e racing and accumulated a good handful of property and died about the age of 66. My fathe r commenced the world very poor, but was a hard worker and was a good manager and my mother w as the same and made property fast and had Several Slaves and much Stock and real estate. M y mother was the mother of Six children and died at the age of 45 years after Seeing all bu t two grown one died in early life and the yountest not grown. My father died after he was 8 31/2 years old. I was married to Miss Martha J. Travis, daughter of Nicholas S. Travis who w as as good a woman as has ever been made. When Iwas one month over twenty one years old an d together with the woman abovedescribed lived a Stedy laborious life and had many friends o f all respectable classes never entertained any fear of Suffering or coming to want. My wif e lived to the age of 68 years and died of paralysis after raising eleven children til they w ere grown and married five girls and six boys and so far as I know they are all respectable . Two of the girls died after starting their families and the balance 6 boys and 3 girls ar e making respectable livings besides carrying a good deal of intelligence."

"Early History of Escambia County," The Escambia County Historical Quarterly, Vol. VIII, Issu e No. 1, March, 1980, p. 12.

"General Jackson had long contemplated taking Florida from theSpaniards and had complete ly mapped out his campaign. With this idea inview, he sent a group of his neighbors--Benjami n Jernigan, James Thomson,Benjamin Brewton, R.G. Cook, Loftin and Loddy Cotton, to the vicin ity ofFort Crawford with herds of cattle in order that he might have a meatsupply in his camp aign against the Spaniards in Florida. The landrecords show that Benjamin Brewton--who is a n ancestor of the Brewtons ofthis section--spelled his name B-R-U-T-O-N when he came to thi s section.Fort Crawford was then occupied by soldiers of the Seventh GeorgiaRegiment, and whi le the fort was ostensibly established to protect thesettlers of this section, there were i n reality no settlers here exceptthose whom Gen. Jackson had sent in with the herds of cattle .

...In order that those who were to navigate the boats should know thestreams, those whom Gen . Jackson had sent in with the herds of cattlecarried by boat to Pensacola, and comparativel y large quantities of thesethings were raised and transported by boat to Pensacola.

It was never necessary for Gen. Jackson to draw upon the supplies that hehad provided in hi s campaign against Pensacola because the United Statesacquired Florida from Spain without hos tility."

History of Conecuh: p. 50

"Fort Crawford, now in Escambia county, was one of the pointsearliest settled in Conecuh . It derived its name from an officer inJackson's command. Benjamin Jernagan seems to hav e been the first topitch his tent in this region. He settled within two and a half miles ofw here Fort Crawford subsequently stood, and on the west side of BurntCorn Creek, within three- quarters of a mile of the present site ofBrewton. This was in the latter part of 1816, or ea rly 1817. Not morethan two or three settlements had been made in the county at that time.Soo n after Mr. Jernigan came here, he was jointed by James Thomson,Benjamin Brewton, R.J. Cook , Lofton and Loddy Cotten. At this time thefort was occupied by the Seventh Georgia Regiment . General Jackson wasin the habit of visiting the home of Benjamin Jernigan--father of theve nerable William Jernigan, now a resident of Pollard. Mr. Jernigan hadremoved with his famil y from Burnt Corn Springs for the purpose ofherding cattle for Jackson's army. From the dire ction of Pensacola,Jackson sent the Jernigan family supplies by the Conecuh River, and manywe re the annoyances to which the boatmen were subjected by the Indiansfiring upon them from th e thickets along the banks. The army quarteredat this point received their supplies from Mon tgomery Hill, on theAlabama river. They were hauled in wagons across the Escambias to FortCr awford, where for a time all the citizens of this section went toprocure bred. The erectio n of the fort was commenced in 1817. Prior tothis time only temporary earthworks had been th rown up. No Indiansettlements were then near; but now and then prowling bands would passthro ugh the country, ostensibly on hunting excursions. They usuallyencamped about the heads of s treams, and built temporary shelters of pinend cypress bark. Sometimes they would linger a t such points a weektogether, and then pass onward. In the winter of 1817, tracts of swampla nd were cleared of the trees and rank cane, which were burned in thefollowing spring, and th e soil planted in corn. Though unprotected byfences, these cleared spots yielded immense cro ps. The following year aneffort was made to fence with the tall cane, but failed.

...When, in 1819, it was determined to erect a courthouse on the eastside of Murder Creek, Be njamin Jernigan, R.J.Cook, Allen and AlexanderMcCaskill, Mabry Thomas, and several others, we re chosen by thiscommunity to select a site for its erection. As has already been stated,th e point fixed upon was Sparta."

Memorandum in re old Fort Crawford, by Ed Leigh McMillan, August 15, 1934.

John Brewton, who was born in the main Fort building of Old Fort Crawfordon Aug. 3, 1857, wa s in my office this morning. He gave me the followinginformation.

His grandfather was Emanuel Brewton. Mr. Brewton's grandmother's namewas Caroline Bacon. H e is of the opinion that his grandfather andgrandmother were born in Georgia. Mr. Brewton' s father's name wasEmanuel Brewton--spelled Brewton. He was born 60 miles from Atlanta--Mr.B rewton doesn't know in which direction. Mr. Brewton's mother's name wasEliza Travis; she wa s the daughter of Nick Travis and was a niece of col.William Barrett Travis of Alamo fame.

Mr. Brewton states that after the war between the States, one ZekeBrewton, who had been a pri soner on Ship Island and came from somewherein Georgia, passed through Brewton and stopped an d married Emma Lovelace, dughter of Jim Lovelace. He says that this Zeke Brewton was no relat ionto the other Brewtons who lived here.

Mr. Brewton says that his grandfather came to the settlement later knownas Fort Crawford, th e later part of the 18th century. He stated that hisgrandmother told him that a fort had bee n estblished by the Spaniardssometime previous to their coming.

Mr. Brewton states that he and his sister Mary Brewton Holland, were bornin the old fort buil ding at Fort Crawford. He says that there wereoriginally five buildings at the fort, and tha t the buildings were builtof hewn logs and were weather boarded and ceiled with sawn lumber . Atthe time the fort buildings wee erected, Mr. Brewton states that hispeople told him tha t no gun could shoot through the walls.. He says thatthe buildings at Fort Crawford were bui lt by the United States soldiers, but that there was a fort, or place of refuge at the spot be fore the FortCrawford buildings were erected.

The buildings at Fort Crawford were built so high above the ground thatthe horses of the sett lers and soldiers could be put under the buildingsand protected from the firing or attacks o f the enemy.

The fort was not at the place where the present fort building is located, but lay about a quar ter of amile to the northeast of the present fortbuilding. Mr. Brewton states that the for t buildings were torn down byhis ancestors and other, and the material in the fort used to bu ild barnsand stables.

There was a race track at Old Fort Crawford for horse racing. Mr.Brewton has never heard o f the soldiers rcing their horses, but said thatthe settlers often raced their horses.

There was a block from which women could mount their horses, and whichblock was lso used as a n auction block for slaves. Mr. Brewton says thatwhen the people would put their slaves on t he auction block for sale, they would dress the slaves in pants with only one leg and shirt wi thonly one sleeve, so tht the physical condition of the slave could be seen; that he was tol d that if rubbed down with hob lard, an old negrowould pass for a young one. He says that i t was common practice amongthe people who sold slaves, to try to deceive the buyer as to th e slave'sage.

Mr. Brewton tells the following story: he says that Tom Dillon was an itinerant school teacher ; that he was employed by Mr. Brewton's grandfather (Nick Travis) to teach his children. H e says that one day while Mr. Dillon was in the woods he heard a gun shooting, but couldn't tell the point from which the shots were fired. Finally he saw smoke coming from a mass of moss u p in a tree, and that he shot at the moss andan Indian fell out: he killed the Indian and cu t a strip of the Indian'shide from his back and made a razor strop.

Johb  Brewton who gave the above information, married Bill Foshee's daughter. At this time h e was living in Texas.
