From the Ed Leigh McMillan Collection

The following information ws given me by Joe Dixon, who lives just overthe Florida line fro m Dixonville:

John Dickson, the original Dickson who came to this country, settledat Dixonville. He w as born in Virginia, married in South Carolina, andmoved to Georgia. He had eleven childre n born in Georgia, and when hemoved to Alabama he brought eleven and his slaves with him. H e settledhere--then Conecuh County--in 1828. Three children were born after hemoved to Alaba ma.

John Dickson spelled his name Dickson. All of his children changedit to Dixon except Cl aiborne. Why, no one seems to know.

He had en sons: Claiborne, Francis, Berryman (Berry), Chappel,Abraham (Abe), Wade Hampto n, Green, William (Billie), John and Agustus(Gus); and four daughters: Susan, Caroline, Viney , and Jincey. Jinceymarried a Mayo and moved to Corpus Christi, Texas; one of the daughtersm arrie a Jernigan and a Smith--I don't know bout the other.

John Dickson died before the Civil War, and his estate was dividedamong his children. H e had thirty-four slaves and 900 head of cattlewhen he died. He owned very little land becau se it wa not necessary toown land at that time. He owned very little land because it was not necessary to own land at that time; you could cultivate any land that youchose to cultivate . This John Dickson cultivated land down in the riverswamp or hammock, north of where Dan Br antley now lives.

Claiborne lived all his life near his birthplace and has 24children, all dead, nd so fa r as can be learned, all their children aredead.

John, Jr. lived at a point on Dixon Creek where he owned andoperated a sawmill for man y years. Augustus lived at what is Dixonvilleuntil his death. All of his children are dead . We have no informationregarding the girls except that Jincey married a Mayo and they move d nearCorpus Christi, Texas. It is difficult to remember fifty or sixty years, and with mos t of the entire Dixon family dead, you will see what it meansto construct anything like a cor rect account of the family.

The family was among the oldest pioneers, and went through all thehardships of the othe r settlers. They did their part to make their partof Escambia County a safe place in which t o live. They were goodmarksmen, especially Claiborne, who had an old time Flint and Steelrif le, long barrel that never failed to bring down the shy old"Buck." Itis said that he had pu b as many as four balls on top of each other in ashooting match, and that on one occasion whe n he wa hunting, he saw adeer's head above a fallen tree top, shot it, but after the smoke cl earedaway it was still there. He reloaded his gun, took another shot at it,but it was stil l there. He loaded his gun again and took another crackat it. This time it did not reappear , and going up to see why he hadmissed twice he found that he had three dead deer.

The following letter, a copy, written by John Dixon, Jr. (father of MarkDixon) to his brother , Wade Dixon, who lived in Texas:

Brewton, Escambia County, Alabama

January 29th, 1881

Wade H. Dixon

Dear Brother--I received your letter of December 29th a few days agoand was glad to hea r from you once more, but I would like to see you andtalk to you better. Things have change d round here mightily since youleft. A part of Old Conecun County and a part of Baldwin Coun ty wastaken in and put together to make Escambia County, Alabama. Brewton is asttion on th e Mobile and Montgomery railroad about two miles from OldFort Crawford across Murder Creek fr om here and about seven miles fromhere it is a small town, but there is a grewat deal of busi ness donethere during the timber season. I am now as busy as I can be in tryingto get my tim ber off as the river is in good stage. I have nearly onethousand pieces of sawed square timb er about ready to send off. Labor isscarce and wages are high. You can stnd in the old yar d and hear thewhisltes of four steam saw-mills when they blow for dinner all squaringlogs int o timber. You say I forgot to name Chappel. He is scufflingalong as you say, but it is har d work.

I have just heard that Berry is very sick.

You wish to know the exact date of Mother's death. She died at theold homeplace on th e sixth of August, 1876.

I farm some as well as running the old mill. I now own all the landon the river from Sp iers to the old Brooklyn place with the exception ofeighty acres belonging to G.F. Weaver, s o you see I have land a plenty tofarm on having bought the Jameson Land, the Hodge, the Hobbs , and theDauphin Land, also the Tol Travis land. You say you don't expect to seeany of us ag ain, but I will see you if nothing extraofdinary happens. Iwill see you by the last of Jun e or soon after. I go just to see you alland not to look a location to settle, as I am settl ed here for thebalance of my life. Strange things happen here--nearly all the pinesfrom Fath er's old place have been cut down and sent down to Milton andthey are not cutting logs at th e Red Hill between here and Father's andare going to put another mill on the Dixon Creek thi s summer, which willthin out the pines.

I will now close by sending my best wishes to you and all yourfamily--I remain

Your brother, John Dixon
