Samuel West, D.D., son of Dr. Sackville West by his wife, Ruth Jenkins.

Was born at Yarmouth, c.c., March 3, 1729/30 O.s., ordained in this place June 3, 1761.

Back
Sackville West was son of Thomas West, physician, the son of _____West, the son of Cap. Francis West, brother of the third Lord De La Warr, Governor of Virginia. Capt. West came from England to Virginia in 1608.

The publication of this did not settle the question but instead brought up two or three other points that were open to argument. The marriage between Sackville and De Le Warr families was too late to have been responsible for the naming of Dr. Sackville West, in 1729, and moreover, this physician had always been known as "Sackfield" West. This writer has only one word to add: there were Sackvilles in Wiltshire in 1600. (Wiltshire collections by Aubrey and Jackson, p. 351.) The native home of Francis West of Duxbury seems to have been in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. He was born about 1626 and came to America as a carpenter. He married Margery Reeves, Feb. 27, 1639, also of Duxbury, but they spent part of their lives in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Dr. Thomas West, son of Francis West and Margery Reeves, was born in Duxbury or Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1646. He married Elizabeth _____, and moved to Tisbury in 1673. Dr. West was a man of skill and superior ability, and the first known physician on Martha's vineyard. He also seems to have been a lawyer of rank, because he was King's attorney and solicitor at various times. He later joined the Chase family near Homes Hole, where he bought thirty acres from Ponit, the Indian Sachem, and later acquired several hundred acres on the west side of the lagoon. In 1700, the households of Thomas West, Isaac Chase and Edward Cottle, comprised the town and numbered 27 persons; by 1750 the Wests alone numbered 30 persons. Dr. West and his wife had become members of the Seventh Day Baptist Church of Newport, Rhode Island, prior to 1692, but in 1702 he was excommunicated for not keeping the tenets of the church. His family, however, continued in good standing. At least six of the descendants of Dr. West and his wife were graduates of Harvard before 1800, and were distinguished clergymen of New England. Dr. West died in 1706, and his wife, who was born in 1653/4 died in 1728. both were buried in West Tisbury. They were the parents of ten children who, for the most part resided in Connecticut:

Lofton Cotton who fought in the War of 1812

Have you ever found proof that Abner Cotton who died in Noxubee Co., Ms., Lofton Cotton who fought in the War of 1812 with him and Radford Cotton were brothers. Also, is there proof that t hey were the sons of Abner Cotton, Sr. who was in the 1800 census of Abbeville Co., S. C. an d then in a few record in Franklin Co., Ga. and later in Jackson Co., Ga. records, place of death unknown. I have been researching this family for years and have never seen this proof. If i t exists, I would like to know about it. William E. Cotton was a close relative of Abner Cotton of Noxubee Cotton and I descend from both of them. I have seen that William E. Cotton's middle name was Eaton but have never been able to find where this information originated. Do you possibly know anything about this. Thanks.

Interesting note and pictures:

Dear Sharman Ramsey,

I came across your website while doing research on some West Ancestors.  Very nice work by the way.  I am trying to figure out where the West's came from whom I have some photos of.  Some of the names are familiar to those on your site such as George, Mary Elizabeth, and John West.  The West's I know of in our family came from Missouri and other's settled in California.  Where they came from prior to that we do not know.  There was mention by a family member that one of West Ancestors was a Delaware Indian West.  Some people tried to hide the fact that they were Native American including the West's in our family but from time to time it would come up.  My Uncle told me that my Grandfather was really treated poorly in School as the kids assumed he was Native American and he and his Brother tried to figure this out and spent long hours speculating where there Grandmother came from and why she looked so Indian.  No one wanted to talk about it. As for myself, it doesn't bother me.  I am also Alaska Native Indian and have always been proud to be designated as Indian.

The photos I have attached are
Top left - George West and his Wife. Top right Martha Elizabeth West. Bottom Left Rufus Lemuel West son of Luther West. Not pictured is Samuel West who was a favorite relative of Campsedell (Campie) West. George, Luther, Campsedell, and Martha were all Brothers and Sister. Campcedell is my Great Great Grandmother and the rest of course Great - Great Uncles and Aunt. Samuel West would be my Great Great Great Grandfather. Sarah Lemley my Great Great Great Great Grandmother. Samuel West's father was John Otho West born 1792 and would be my GR-GR-GR-GR Grandfather. We have not been able to figure out who his parents were and I am hoping you might know of him.
John Oath West2 was born in 1792. Was the middle name, Oath or Otho?
Samuel L. West lists, John Otho West.

Sarah Lemley and John Oath West had the following children:
+189 i. Samuel West.
190 ii. William West15.
191 iii. Otto West15.
192 iv. Mary West15.

Campsedell was the daughter of Samuel West b. 26 Jan 1827 in York Twnshp. Belmont Co., OH. He d. 4 Aug 1906 in Clever, Christian Co., MO. He married Rebecca Henderson, dau. of Alexander Henderson. Samuel and Rebecca had 13 children. Campsedell was their 8th child. Her brother George (whose picture you have) was the 9th and I think she was close to him. He actually moved to CA and is probably part of the reason, if not all, that my grandmother Ada came to CA. Samuel West's father wasJohn Oath West, ( or Otho - an old norman/germanic name meaning wealthy) b. abt 1791/92 in Mt. Morris, PA and died in Belmont Co., OH. He married Sarah Lemley who was a daughter of Peter Lemley and his wife Mary Ann "Polly" Cathers. The Lemleys were German and can be traced to the immegrating ancestor. George Lemley who married Catherine Yoho was our direct line.

Sammy West thought that John Oath's father was a Samuel West, b. in Greene Co., PA who married a Hannah? He also found that John Oath had 2 brothers, a Passmore West and a William S. West. The name Passmore might have been a last name made into a first name. It was carried down. John Oath also had a son named Passmore. Some of our Wests migrated to Wood Co., West Virginia. Sammy went to Belmont Co., OH and Wood Co., WV and found records, talked to people who were still alive that were related.

A possible connection. Or

Maybe I'm completely off but it never hurts to ask. The page I was reading on your site in relation to this is http://www.southern-style.com/west.htm page. The only possible connection would be to someone in the 11th generation if at all.
