TO ALL DESCENDANTS OF REV. DEMPSEY DOWLING
Please fill out the Family information Sheet!!!!!!!
Dear Cousins and Friends;
Our ancestor Rev. Dempsey Dowling, and his
wife were chiefly responsible for the construction of Claybank Methodist
Church in 1852. Rev. Dempsey and his wife, Martha Stokes Dowling
helped found Claybank Church on land given by their daughter, Lacy and her
husband, Elisha Matthews. Additional land was later given by other
descendants of Reverend Dempsey and Martha.
Reverend Dempsey Dowling, born December 14,
1783, died April 26, 1865, and his wife, Martha Stokes Dowling, born Marcy
4, 1787, died January 15, 1859, are buried in Claybank Cemetery.
Their markers at their graves are in poor condition, the inscriptions
almost illegible. As their descendants, we feel an additional marker
should be erected with new legible inscriptions.
We plan a gathering of all Dowling
descendants on December 13, 2008 to remember our ancestor on the
anniversary of his 225th birthday by dedicating this new marker. A
fund has been set up to cover the cost of this marker and we encourage you
as a descendant of this remarkable man to be a part of this project.
Checks should be made to "The Dempsey Dowling Fund", mailed to P.O.Box
1729, Ozark, Alabama 36360, in care of Joseph H. Adams. We look
forward to your presence at this dedication and additional activities.
The cost of the monument will be approximately $3000,00. A
dedication will be held at Claybank Cemetery at 11 A.M. followed by a
catered dinner at The Gathering Place in downtown Ozark at noon. A
program will follow with additional information about Dempsey and his
family.
We hope that you will be responsible for
sharing these plans with your family members and join us in honoring these
wonderful ancestors. Please feel free to call or write for
additional information.
