Letter from friend of Mrs. Charles Newton: (Susan
Grabek's comments on the above letter from Mrs. Charles Newton (Monroe
County genealogist)
Will pass this on to you for historical purposes. Information from
Forsythe County, Georgia:
Col. John Lindsey-Will 1783 South Carolina
Children:
Margaret d. 1751
(Margaret married Lewis Hogg, and they had a son John who had a son Lewis
b. 1755. He became Major Lewis Hogg in SC. There is no way Margaret
could have been John's daughter because she was about the same age as John
Lindsey, perhaps even older. John did administer her estate, but he was a
court justice and he administered estates of non family members.
Margaret's estate records do not state her maiden name, or any
relationship to John Lindsey. If Margaret was a Lindsey, she might have
been a sister, but there are no records to prove her maiden name. Though
John Hogg was a minor in 1751 when Margaret died, he was married by 1755
when Lewis was born. John Lindsey was appointed guardian of John Hogg to
ensure that young John got his legal inheritance from his mother's
estate.)
James (b. by 1731)
d. 1799 S.C. (will) (James
first appeared in Frederick Co. records in 1753. He was married to Ruth
by 1762, and still married to her when he wrote his will in 1799)
Lt. Col. John 1740-1795
(William Thorndale's research shows that John was born in the 1730's,
because he began appearing in court records in the 1750's. I think the
family bible record was an estimate for his birth year. This bible has
not been authenticated as far as I know.)
Sarah Married Thomas Speakes
Esther d. 1818 Newberry S.C. Married Gen. Jarred Smith
Abigail md. Humphrey Wells
Thomas d. 1815 Newberry S. C. Md. Gen. Jarred Smith (Descendants of this
line live in Athens, Georgia)
(Thomas married Lydia King, dau. of Charles King and Charity Pennington
King)
Samuel b. ca. 1750, d.
ca. 1825: Md. Elizabeth Ford, dau. of James Ford of Newberry Co. Samuel
was the last named in his father's will, and probably the youngest. He
was a heavy drinker, and he suffered a stroke that forced him to leave
office in 1815. He had been a court ordinary and justice of the quorum in
Newberry Co. for many years. Samuel did not appear in any Frederick Co.,
VA records. He was probably a minor when the family left for SC ca.
1768.
Jacob (?) Newberry, S.C. , md. Elizabeth Ford
(John did not name anyone Jacob in his will. The
only Jacob who appears in the Newberry records was the son of Thomas, who
married Elizabeth Sheppard in Newberry Co. in 1797. James was the oldest
son, and he was born in Frederick Co., VA by 1731. All of John and Alce's
children were born ca. 1730-1755, with Samuel likely being the youngest.
John Lindsey Sr. had died by 1786. His widow Alce went to court that year
to sue Hugh Lavendar for misusing funds from her deceased husband's
estate.)
